If you want to see animals in your backyard (giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, etc), then the Animal Kingdom Lodge is for you. Honestly, I think that's all it's good for. The ambience is really cool, though. But it's not really close to any park. You would think that it has some easy way of transportation to the Animal Kingdom besides the buses, but that's not the case. The only way to get to the Animal Kingdom from the Animal Kingdom Lodge (and anywhere else in WDW) is by bus or rental car. You also have to take a bus or rental car to other places in WDW. But don't get me wrong, it's an amazing hotel. If you do decide to stay there, you won't be disappointed. It's a very relaxing hotel. I stayed there once and I woke up with giraffes in my backyard. It was exceptionally awesome.

Polynesian Resort is really cool as well. The theme is fun, and the location is great. In WDW, there's a Monorail system that goes to the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT. This system also goes through the Contemporary Resort, Polynesian Resort and Grand Floridian. So it's incredibly easy to get to EPCOT and Magic Kingdom from the Polynesian. Also, you could take the Monorail to EPCOT, walk through to the entrance at the other side of the park, and then walk over to Disney Hollywood Studios (you have to walk around the Boardwalk hotel if you decide to do this). That's 3 out of the 4 main parks that are easily reached.

So it depends what you're looking for in a hotel. Hope this helps!

While there are benefits to the Poly Resort, I way prefer the Animal Kingdom Lodge. The Poly resort is on the monorail line so it's easy to get to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot. Animal Kingdom only has busses. But the Poly Resort is much older - and it feels that way. Animal Kingdom is newer. It's refreshing and beautiful. It has a great pool and even better hot tubs. I feel more authentically in Africa there than I feel authentically in Polynesia at the Poly Resort. Animal Kingdom Lodge has a nice firepit and chairs outside for storytelling or just hanging out on a beautiful night. It also has fantastic restaurants. You can still do the luau at the Poly Resort, even if you're not staying there.
